The horse does not do all the work! Horseback riding is a sport, featured in three different Olympic disciplines. The rider maintains their balance by constantly engaging most of their muscles to some degree. Even grooming and tacking up burns lots of calories and engages many muscles, core and others. Plus there is a cardio element as well - cantering is similar to running or swimming at a fair clip.
Horseback riding is completely engaging. Riders minds are directing their body, communicating with the horse, and getting comfortable with the side of their brain that guides with instinct and intuition. Riding is dynamic, requiring the rider to anticipate, act and interact with an animal that has independent ideas, initiatives, and preferences. Possibly the ultimate opportunity to stay in the moment.
Working with horses impacts us on so many levels. Being in the outdoors and dealing with the change in elements. Having our senses impacted with smells of horses and leather and the sight of dappled horseflesh. Establishing communication with a thousand pound animal of prey. It is pretty much guaranteed you will leave the stables with a deep feeling of well being and satisfaction that will stay with you for a surprisingly long time ... a mental touchstone of happiness that you will keep reaching for.
